Major's Hill Park
Major's Hill Park is Ottawa's front porch — an elevated green space perched on a bluff above the Ottawa River, offering what might be the city's most complete panoramic view: Parliament Hill and the Peace Tower to the west, the Fairmont Chateau Laurier directly below, the Alexandra Bridge arcing across to Gatineau, and the river itself flowing wide and grey-blue beneath it all. It's the spot where Ottawa reveals itself as more than a government town.
The park takes its name from Major Daniel Bolton, a British officer who lived on this site while supervising construction of the Rideau Canal in the late 1820s. At just under five hectares, it's small enough to walk in fifteen minutes and large enough to disappear in for an afternoon. Mature trees — mostly elms and maples — provide canopy shade over gently sloping lawns, and the pathways wind past heritage cannon, a statue of Anishinaabe leader Tessouat, and what locals call the noon gun: a cannon fired daily at noon by the Canadian Forces, a tradition dating to 1869 that still startles unsuspecting visitors.
The park connects directly to the ByWard Market via a short walk down the stairs at its eastern edge, and the National Gallery of Canada sits on its northern boundary — Maman, the giant spider sculpture, is visible from the park's paths. This positioning makes Major's Hill the natural fulcrum of a downtown walking tour: art, food, history, and landscape are all within a five-minute walk.
In summer, the park hosts stages and events during the Canadian Tulip Festival (May), Canada Day celebrations (July 1st — Major's Hill is the main festival site), and various cultural festivals throughout the season. During Canada Day, the park fills with tens of thousands of people for concerts, fireworks, and the kind of collective celebration that defines national capital events.
For a quieter experience, come on a weekday morning. The views are identical, the lawns are empty, and the noon gun is the only event on the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every day at exactly 12:00 PM, a cannon is fired from the park by the Canadian Armed Forces — a tradition that began in 1869. The blast is loud and can be heard across downtown. It's not a show or ceremony — it's a single cannon shot with no fanfare, which makes it oddly more impressive. Don't stand right next to the cannon emplacement if you startle easily.
It's THE spot for Canada Day. Major's Hill Park is the main festival site for July 1st celebrations, with concert stages, cultural performances, food vendors, and the best vantage point for the evening fireworks over Parliament Hill. Arrive very early to claim a spot — the park fills to capacity hours before the fireworks. Expect security screening and crowd control measures.
Major's Hill Park is one of the Tulip Festival sites in May, with planted beds and displays. However, the densest tulip plantings are at Commissioner's Park along Dow's Lake (south Ottawa, closer to Adam's Airport Inn). Major's Hill has tulips plus the downtown views — Dow's Lake has the most spectacular concentration of flowers. Ideally, visit both.
Major's Hill Park is 11.9 km from Ottawa International Airport (YOW). The easiest route is to stay at Adam's Airport Inn (7 minutes from the terminal) and drive 22 minutes to Major's Hill Park. Free parking lot. You can also take OC Transpo bus from downtown Ottawa.
Ottawa's parks are beautiful year-round. Spring (May) brings tulips and blossoms, summer offers the longest daylight hours, fall (October) has spectacular foliage, and winter transforms the landscape with snow. Major's Hill Park is accessible in all seasons, though some trails may be icy in winter — wear appropriate footwear.
