Hog's Back Falls Lookout

The falls are surprisingly powerful for an urban setting — the Rideau River drops over a wide rock ledge, and the lookout provides excellent views from multiple angles including a pedestrian bridge directly above the cascade. Spring (April–May) offers the most dramatic water flow, but the falls are photogenic year-round. In winter, ice formations along the rock face add a different kind of beauty.

Yes. Paved walking paths connect the parking area to the lookout points and the pedestrian bridge. The paths are accessible and well-maintained. For a longer walk, the Rideau Canal Eastern Pathway runs adjacent to the park and connects south toward Carleton University or north toward Dow’s Lake — a flat, scenic route along the canal.

Yes. The lookout areas have safety railings, and the walking paths are stroller-friendly. Children are fascinated by the rushing water and the pedestrian bridge. The adjacent Hog’s Back Park has picnic tables and open green space for children to run. Keep close supervision near the water’s edge, as currents are strong.

Yes. There is a free parking lot at Hog’s Back Park, directly adjacent to the falls lookout. The lot is small and can fill up on warm weekends, but on most days parking is straightforward. Overflow parking is available along Colonel By Drive.

Hog’s Back Falls is approximately 7 km from Ottawa International Airport (YOW). From Adam’s Airport Inn (7 minutes from the terminal), drive about 12 minutes north via Riverside Drive to Hog’s Back Road. Free parking is available in the park lot. It is the closest natural attraction to the hotel.
