Christmas Lights Across Canada

The lights are illuminated nightly from early December through early January, typically December 4 through January 7. Lights turn on at dusk (around 4:30–5 PM in December) and remain lit until approximately 2 AM. No tickets or reservations are needed — simply walk or drive the route any evening during the season.

Yes. The entire Christmas Lights Across Canada experience is free. Walking routes and driving routes are both available at no charge. Maps of the light installations are posted on the Canadian Heritage website and at information kiosks along Confederation Boulevard.

Walking offers the most immersive experience — start at Parliament Hill, walk along Confederation Boulevard past the National War Memorial, and continue toward the Rideau Canal locks. The full walking route takes about 45–60 minutes. For families with young children or on very cold evenings, the driving route covers many of the same installations from the warmth of your car.

Street parking along Elgin Street and Wellington Street is available after 5:30 PM. The World Exchange Plaza garage on Queen Street is centrally located and a short walk to Parliament Hill. On weekends in December, downtown parking fills faster — arriving before 6 PM is recommended or consider a rideshare from Adam’s Airport Inn.

The light displays centre on Parliament Hill and Confederation Boulevard, approximately 12 km from Ottawa International Airport (YOW). Stay at Adam’s Airport Inn (7 minutes from the terminal) and drive about 20 minutes via the Airport Parkway. Evening traffic is typically lighter than rush hour, making the drive straightforward.
